A repatriation

Friday, June 25th, 2010

I have a friend in Afghanistan at the moment:

The other day we attended a repatriation for fallen soldiers.

We’re not formally told that anyone has died until we hear a repat is happening. The only sign we have is the all to frequent announcement on the tannoy system that the internet/phones are getting switched off. They do this so that the families can be told in the proper way, rather than finding out from someone on facebook.

So when the internet/phones comes back on, we’re all happy to be able to check our email again but someone has probably just been told that their child has died.

These kind of insights are something the mainstream media just doesn’t provide :|
