Research

Create a 'web quest’ which will help build students’ understanding of the Civil War in El Salvador and how the people of that county, like Chava and his family, suffered for being on the front line of a grim ideological struggle between right and left-wing forces and the belief America has in its right to intervene to protect its interests in Latin and South America (the Monroe Doctrine – 1823). Older students might be interested to contrast the telling of the story of the El Salvador Civil War in Innocent Voices with the treatment it received in Oliver Stone’s Salvador (1986).

A biased film?

Some have accused the film of being biased towards the left-wing guerrillas – is this fair? For example, why does the film show the FMLN launching their attack from the school and the church? They also appear to recruit children to their cause.

Western kids

Are children in the West over-protected? Consider this, given what you see in the film and the responsibility and experiences the children have in Innocent Voices.
